I had two interviews this week during ISM. My first interview was with the General Counsel of RugDoctor in Plano. This interview allowed me to get the perspective of a domestic company rather than an international company. RugDoctor is a much smaller company, and Ms. Howell does not have as large of an area to cover compared to large international corporations. I have found that most general counsels have worked with various size firms and businesses before becoming the head of a company. When I graduate from law school I hope to spend a small amount of time working at a law firm, because I want to be able to work on the business side as soon as I can. There are still complexities with running a domestic company because you have to deal with different laws between states, and some states such as New York and California different laws from the normal structure of state laws which makes transactions more difficult. My other interview was with Mr. Williams, who has worked internationally for law firms. He is specifically responsible for dealing with clients from different countries and handling business negotiations. Mr. Williams has spent more time in the courtroom then a general counsel would, and he interacts more personally with clients. This aspect of corporate law is also very interesting, and this interview made me realize I should begin to think about what field I would want to practice corporate law in.
