Over the past week in ISM I have gone on a mentor visit and formulated an assessment regarding previous mentor visits. On Friday, I was able to attend an HR meeting that looked at the company retirement plans. I am not well-informed on personal finance or planning for retirement so it was difficult to understand some terms and concepts that were discussed. I recognized some of the terms they used from my AP Economics course and I anticipate that I will learn more of these terms as I progress through the semester. I also learned about emerging state and municipal laws that detail more regulations on paid sick leave and its incorporation into different companies. Additionally, I learned about a new movement to eliminate salary history on job applications. This would help people to not be restrained by their previous salaries as they advanced in their career.
I also wrote a primary assessment over various immigration-focused mentor visits, summarizing my overall learning and takeaways. I focused more on the H-1B visas and new expectations regarding prevailing wages. This week I need to work more on my final product and begin researching the different types of visas in the US in more depth.
